Seeds ‘n Stitches was started in 2021 by me, Dalah Carretero.
I have loved gardening my whole life, some of my earliest memories being of gardening with my mother, who would tell me about the different flowers she was planting. She was also an avid crocheter and taught me how to crochet in 1997 when I was 7 years old.
I kept it up through the years, and when my parents bought an acre on the outskirts of Santa Rosa, CA, it was a dream come true! I spent much of my teen years devouring homesteading books on gardening and animal husbandry, then putting what I learned into practice! I remember when I was 15, I spent every cent I had on buying my very own first seeds. My Dad let me manage the garden that year, as well as our chickens, rabbits, and he let me raise turkeys and ducks.
I married my husband Daniel in 2012 and we had our first daughter that year too. We lived in a little apartment with a tiny backyard that didn’t give me much space for gardening, but that didn’t stop me. I still grew what I could, but dove deeper into crocheting than gardening in those years.
By 2019, we had grown to being a family of 5, and we made the tough choice to move out of our apartment. We moved in to rent from Daniel’s mother so we could save money for a down payment on a home of our own. With some decent sized suburban front and back yards available to garden in, I was finally able to really dive into gardening again!
But then 2020 hit. I was pregnant with our 4th child Emery, homeschooling Hailie and raising our 2 toddler boys. Daniel was in construction (and he still is!) and with all the shutdowns, he was suddenly out of work. This put a huge financial strain on us. I racked my brain trying to think of some way I could make money from home.
I knew I wanted to start a business that would incorporate gardening and crocheting, and in by July of 2021, Seeds ‘n Stitches was born! I taught myself to knit that year too and it has now become my dominant craft.
We have faced setbacks and challenges but living in the suburbs while I dream of starting a homestead has caused me to pause and learn. I have gained knowledge and skills that can help others learn, grow and make.
I do my best here with what I can! I am proud to be able to offer seasonal nursery plant starts, fresh cut flower bouquets, handmade knit & crochet Items as well as patterns for the items I design myself!
